Profile
Martin Nagl-Cupal is associate professor of nursing science and has been the deputy head of the department since Fall 2025. He completed his nursing diploma in Innsbruck and worked in direct care for many years. He then studied nursing science at the University of Vienna, completed his Ph.D. at the University of Witten/Herdecke, and took a postdoctoral position before accepting a tenure-track professorship. After fulfilling his qualification agreement in 2021, he was appointed associate professor.
From 2021 to 2025, he served as the head of the Department of Nursing Science.
In his teaching, research, and supervisory work at the master's and Ph.D. levels, he primarily focuses on family and nursing care, as well as illness in the family. He places special emphasis on children, adolescents, and young adults as family caregivers. His core expertise lies in qualitative research.
He is also a founding member of the Austrian Society for Nursing Science and is active in the International Family Nursing Association. He is the editor of the international journal PFLEGE and a permanent member of the Ethics Committee of the City of Vienna.
